I'm currently a senior year mechanical engineering student and this will be my third year on SJSU's Formula SAE team. I spent my first two years on the team working on the vehicle's suspension system and am now leading the development of our 2022 combustion car. No other program, job, or course has contributed to my overall knowledge and engineering skillset in the way this team has and I am forever grateful.

I still remember the High school trip I took when I first saw and met this team. I was immediately hooked on the automotive appeal of racing and the chance at winning a Motorsport competition. The idea of racing hooked me, but something else kept me coming back. I soon learned FSAE meant more than building race cars, it meant being a part of a team. As a collective, we grow and evolve towards excellence. Although coursework has contributed to the skills I use . A large portion of MY skills has come from problem-solving on this team. The cycle we experience is a grind. Whether it's design, manufacturing, or testing we are always reminded that there is a larger picture. What I love the most about Formula is that at each step of the process we develop into better real-world problem solvers. FSAE has been the first place where I finally mix my passion and my career together. One of the lessons I have taken away from this team is when your able to align passion and dedication you can achieve amazing feats. Formula has granted me the chance to grow as an Engineer and as a person and I will be forever grateful for this experience.

I am a 4th year Business Management Information Systems student at SJSU. Spartan Racing has been an outlet for me to develop myself both professionally and academically. Being part of this team I have learned many things, but as business lead I have learned how to handle team logistics, financial and personnel management, sponsor outreach, and funding.

I started getting involved with Spartan Racing Electric last August in 2020, and although Covid-19 stopped me from being able to come in as much as I wanted I was quickly swept away by the fast pace preparation phase of the team leading up to our Michigan 2021 race. I got more and more involved, loving the amount of practical knowledge I was learning as well as the experience I was able to contribute. I soon decided that I was all in on the Formula family and have taken on the position to combine two chassis into one so that we can truly become one team with Spartan Racing. Additionally, I became the treasurer for SRE-6 so that I can help ensure that we acquire the funds needed to build a race car and to maintain our high standard of organization on the business team.

My name is Nathaniel Irpan, I'm a senior at San Jose State University as well as the current Aerodynamics lead for Spartan Racing. As the Aerodynamics lead, I oversee the development and manufacturing of all aerodynamic parts on the car, ensuring their effectiveness in improving car performance. When I first joined the team as an intern in my freshman year I exposed to the different disciplines of engineering and was so enthralled with aerodynamics that I switched my major to Aerospace Engineering. Through this effect, I became more engaged with the team itself that I became the rear wing designer and now the Aerodynamics lead. Being on the team for my entire career at SJSU, gave me more opportunities to grow as a person and engineer than what I would've expected.

Hello! I joined the electric team in Fall, 2017, and became Suspension and Vehicle Dynamics Team lead for two years in 2019. I have found my time on SJSU's FSAE team extremely valuable in learning how to think creatively and critically, communicate professionally, and manage projects with an accelerated timeline. In addition to engineering I enjoy playing music, making art, and running!

I am currently a third year Business Management student at San Jose State University and this will be my second year with Spartan Racing. I have learned many skills through the club such as event management, marketing, social media management, and sponsor relations. Formula SAE has allowed me to gain valuable knowledge from industry professionals and network with individuals in the automotive and engineering fields. I have also assisted in the manufacturing process and I enjoy learning about the technical aspects of the car. The experience I have gained while being on the team is directly applicable to industry and will allow me to excel in the workforce.

As the son of two people who grew up on farms, I find it crazy to be where I am. Up until I joined Spartan Racing Electric, it felt like my career was hitting a wall. It was my junior year and I hadn't interned anywhere and graduation seemed like a looming deadline. Joining Spartan Racing helped me gain some direction and focus, as well as gave me the resources I needed to get an internship. I've always enjoyed playing with electronics, so I taught myself how to program in C and Java.

I’m currently a Junior in Mechanical Engineering and have been a part of the team since Fall 2019. Since then I've been an intern, and later a member of the Strategy/Vehicle Dynamics subteam. I’ve learned an insane amount through my experience on the team and I can’t wait to dive deeper as Powertrain lead for the 2022 season. Outside of formula I have a passion for motorsports and photography, which seem to go hand in hand with what we do here.

James Wong earned his B.S. in Nanoengineering at UC San Diego and is currently pursuing a Masters in mechanical engineering. He has previously worked at Honda Performance Development working on IndyCar race engines as a performance engineer and now works in the defense industry while pursuing his graduate studies. He led the team amidst COVID lockdowns to a 2nd overall finish at the 2021 FSAE Michigan event with the first running electric car in SJSU's history. James' new goal for the season is to build a newly optimized car capable of seizing 1st place at competition.

Spartan Racing and Formula SAE have been some of the fastest pace learning that I have ever encountered. The late nights, the community, and the firehose of knowledge is what has made me come back for another round as I work on my master's degree. FSAE is what originally landed me an internship during school and subsequent job when I finished my bachelor's. To come back to school and impart what little I have to give while learning more and getting to go back to working on a racecar is awesome. I look forward to continuing to lead the Strategy/VD team as we try to wrap our heads around maximizing Spartan Racing's competitiveness through the use of points analysis, tire models, lapsims, and tuning to extend our vehicle's performance envelope.
